The Asiatic lion

The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) also known as the Indian lion, Persian lion and Eurasian Lion is a subspecies of lion. The only place in the wild where the lion is found is in the Gir Forest of Gujarat, India. The Asiatic lions once ranged from the Mediterranean to the north-eastern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but excessive hunting, water pollution and decline in natural prey reduced their habitat. Asiatic lions are smaller and lighter than their African counterparts, but are equally aggressive. The Lion is described as large, carnivorous feline mammal (Panthera leo).

Lions have a short tawny coat, a tufted tail, and male lions have a heavy mane around the head and neck. Lions, unlike the tiger, hunt in groups. The relationship between man and the lion haven't always been a good one. Very recently, a new sanctuary has been declared for the lion in this area, giving them more room to spread out without causing conflicts with humans. Suprisingly, certain tribes of people coexist more or less peacefully with the lion in these sanctuaries. Still, the Asiatic lion is highly endangered.Defenders of Wildlife are working to pass legislation that will help keep the 15 species of big cats and rare canines, which are outside the United States in April 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the law of the Great Cats and Rare Canines Act (HR 411) aimed at preserving 15 of the world of rare wild dogs and cats, including lions.

Other groups, conservation work to solve problems between farmers, livestock owners and the lions, the proof of Bomas, natural thorny enclosure, where farmers can keep their animals at night to prevent the death of livestock and thereby decreasing the need to kill a lion.Another reason is to protect the lions, the lion of all the economic benefits claimed for the tourists. This can be done by involving zoos in the country. Conservation groups use the growth of tourism, to see if they are able to provide farmers with the percentage of that money to travel as an incentive to keep the lions roam and thrive again.
